Five Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) students from Urdaneta City National High School (UCNHS) showcased their accounting prowess during the recently concluded 2022 5th ABM Cup. Four of these students advanced to the Grand Finals together with the contestants who qualified from the remaining 57 schools, out of 185 schools in the country.

The accounting aficionados showcased their prowess during the competition's Elimination Round, which was held online on the morning of March 28, 2022. Two students from UCNHS were top contestants in Region 1 while the other two students secured a place in Wildcard Competition.

The five graduating ABM students who represented Urdaneta City National High School in the 2022 5th ABM Cup are Francesca Denise Viray (Region 1 Top 3.5 - National qualifier), Angel Lyka P. Bocobo (Region 1 Top 5 - National qualifier), Andrew H. Dancel (Region 1 Top 6.5 - Wildcard Contestant National qualifier), Florie Mae A. Camia (Region 1 top 9 - Wildcard Contestant National qualifier), and Marjory Shane Blanco of Grade 12 ABM Smith.

“We just thought that aside from the competition, we can also benefit from joining the competition as it helps us gain more knowledge in accounting works. The event was quite challenging since we had it starting at eight in the morning then ending at five in the afternoon. Even though the questions were quite tough, it was still a fun experience,” Dancel said.

The ABM Cup elimination round consisted of Easy, Average, and Difficult rounds. Each round consists of 10 questions. Questions are mixed of Multiple choices, Identification, and Numerical Answers.

The competition was designed to challenge students not only based on their Basic Math knowledge but also on their analysis and creativity in coming up with solutions.

“We started preparing for the 5TH ABM Cup competition in February and went through topics that included bank reconciliations, financial statements, ratio analysis, VAT computations, gross profit method, and depreciation from Fundamentals of Accountancy, Business, and Management 1 and 2. During the competition, I always motivate myself by praying. Now that I have entered the Final Round, I still have the confidence and determination to win. I will make UCNHS and my parents proud,” Camia related.

The ABM Students were guided by their Coach Norman T. Samera, and the ABM Group Head Jonald Valeña who supported them in the competition.

“There is actually no secret to winning, but this is one thing that I held tight all throughout the reviewing period and the actual competition- Prayer. For the whole month, I've been praying for this, that if it is His will, He would give me everything I need to achieve it. I was even praying while tapping on the options during the quiz bee, praying that He will guide me and give me knowledge and wisdom for every question that they will throw. But of course, prayers and hard work are always a lethal combination. I am very thankful that everything I worked hard paid off”, Bocobo explains their secret to winning the elimination round.
