UCNHS Secures DILG Safety Seal
By: Jenna Mae Sanchez
Last March 29, 2022, the Urdaneta City National High School (UCNHS) received its Safety Seal certificate from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine National Police (PNP), and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Urdaneta City as a certification that the school is cleared in preparation for the pilot face-to-face classes, expansion, and transitioning to the new normal.
After months of meticulous planning and preparations, the UCNHS has subsequently joined the ranks of schools that have obtained the DILG Urdaneta City's safety seal. The Safety Seal signifies that the school follows safety and health protocols against COVID-19, for it is an important requirement in the operation of face-to-face classes as it denotes that UCNHS passed the standards of safety protocols and procedures.

Led and signed by PLTCOL. Jerome B. Wangkey, Chief of Police – Urdaneta City Police Station (PNP), SINSP. Junieland I. Wanawan, City Fire Marshall (BFP), together with Mr. Rhoderick M. Dawis, City Local Government Operation Officer – (DILG) Urdaneta City, the team carried out a comprehensive inspection of the school vicinity, including the entry and exit lanes, signages, classroom settings, 1-meter apart seats, garbage bins, and the like.
The safety seal certificate is valid from March 29, 2022 to September 29, 2022. The protocol compliance will be evaluated and determined for succeeding recognition renewal. The inspection concluded with the awarding of the highly coveted safety seal which was received by Mr. Rommel F. Milliones, Principal IV.
UCNHS Speech Laboratory Grand Opening

The Speech Laboratory at Urdaneta City National High School was officially opened December 14, 2021. The Special Program in Journalism Team, teachers from the English Department, parents, and community members participated in the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in UCNHS’ new Speech Laboratory.
The speakers were Mr. Rommel F. Millones, Principal IV of Urdaneta City NHS; Mrs. Mae L. Caldona, Assistant Principal of Urdaneta City NHS; Mrs. Perlita A. Briones, Head Teacher IV, English; Mrs. Almera S. Zarate, EPS English; and Mrs. Maritess C. Estrada, PSDS in-charge of Cluster 1. The school now offers a dedicated place for students to record and rehearse speeches with the production of high-quality, multi-media projects. These educational facilities would benefit both teachers and students, particularly those who are enrolled in the Special Program in Journalism (SPJ).

Prior to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, it was publicly announced on the Official Province of Pangasinan’s Facebook page that Gov. Amado I. Espino III led the ceremonial turn-over of Speech Laboratory specialized equipment last year on the 8th of September. The following tools and equipment were distributed equally to the Alaminos City,
Urdaneta City, and San Carlos City School Divisions. For their respective speech laboratories, each School Divisions received a sample tablet, headset, and flash drive. Those instruments were collected by the School Division of Urdaneta City, represented by the aforementioned, Mr. Rommel F. Millones, Ms. Mae L. Caldona, and Mr. Isagani D. Narciso, SEPS for Soc. Mob.
Urdaneta City National High School gratefully acknowledges everyone who attended and contributed to making the new speech laboratory clean and comfortable, especially to our governor, who generously gave the proper equipment.

STEM STRAND INITIATES WORK IMMERSION, OTHER STRANDS FOLLOW SUIT
The ongoing COVID-19 crisis brought havoc to the educational system. In the Senior High School (SHS) setting, the implementation of Work Immersion, a necessary course in Senior High School, was significantly hampered. As the country went on lockdown to prevent the spread of the dreaded Covid-19 virus, Work Immersion had to be put on hold.
Work Immersion (WI) is a program that allows SHS students to simulate employment and use their competencies in areas of specialization and applied studies in real-world settings. Work immersion is one of the required subjects for graduating students, and it requires Senior High School students to participate in a practicum related to their course. Through Work Immersion, the students will be able to learn and experience things in a work-related environment in their locality. Hence, it will be a great help to enhance their competency level that would develop their communication and interpersonal skills through the guidance of industry experts and teachers. Thus, the student acquires the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the needs and standards of employment.
Due to the existing pandemic, Memorandum DM-CI-2020-00085, Guidelines for Work Immersion Implementation During Crisis Situation came out last year. It basically states that in lieu of Work Immersion, a Capstone Project may be accomplished by SHS learners under the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand. A Capstone Project is research conducted in the field of interest of the learner.

As Pangasinan was already in Alert Level 1, a meeting led by Mr. Roland V. Benito, Work Immersion Coordinator for STEM; and participated by the parents of STEM students a resulted in Resolution No. 01 – 01, S. 2022. The resolution allowed for limited face-to-face deployment and other options such as Capstone Project, Working Student, working with a relative in the industry of interest or watching a video with written requirements for barangays under lockdown. Several parents opted for deployment.
In preparation for Work Immersion, the STEM students participated in a two-day, pre-deployment training with the aim of bridging the gap in learning and application of skills caused by the pandemic. The training was to prepare students for their real deployment. Different activities were carried out in breakout group sessions guided by SHS work immersion teachers. The activities took place last March 23 and 24 in the SHS buildings.
The STEM students will be deployed to various work immersion facilities based on their college course preferences. Prior to deployment in the work immersion facility, students will be familiarized with the program, learn proper values and work ethics, and appreciate the work process.
As STEM is now ready to deploy its students, other strands are also in varying stages of preparation. In the weeks to come, HUMSS, TVL and Arts and Design will also be deploying students who opted for Work Immersion.
